While the primary activities in the Loculi region remain closely tied to agriculture and pastoralism, notable and significant artisanal endeavors stand out. One such endeavor is the ceramic work of Francesca Chessa, known by her artistic name Kefra.
The ceramist completed her artistic studies in professional ceramic workshops in Nuoro and specialized as a potter in Montelupo Fiorentino. Her workshop, situated in the former stable of her grandfather in the town of Loculi, maintains a dialogue between her artistic exploration and the inspirations drawn from the local environment. This dialogue is fostered through active exchanges that the ceramist engages in with spaces and museums dedicated to local traditions.
Her distinctive style, a result of targeted studies and personal passion, combines refined techniques reminiscent of ancient and precious majolica with subtle ethnic nods to local traditions.
Kefra’s skill at the potter’s wheel, captured in the photograph, finds expression in her considerable production of pottery. These objects, once humble everyday items, are meticulously adorned with a well-balanced interplay of geometric designs, intricate weavings, and vibrant solid colors. Her line of pitchers and pourers showcases variations of hues and harmonious geometric motifs. The large centerpiece plates feature ever-changing decorations designed to be appreciated from multiple angles. The “gallinelle” (little hens), vases adorned with refined plastic additions, elegantly revisit themes from the local tradition.
As decoration on clay, the ceramist employs white slip that is incised and coated with colored glazes. She has developed distinct finishing procedures involving oxides and waxes, lending the ceramic surfaces a well-worn, waterproof effect with intentionally aged aesthetics. The glazes, applied with non-toxic materials, further ensure their suitability for food use.
Kefra’s workshop is located in Loculi, at Località Sae Ziu Mele. It’s open for production, visits, and the sale of her creations.
